These pages have been transcribed from Interstate Commerce Commission Valuation Reports. Other references have been used to clarify some internal inconsistencies. They are not nor are they intended to be a complete statement of the history of the Pennsylvania Railroad. Persons wishing to explore that history more deeply should consult one or more of:

I have attempted to transcribe both the content and form of the original reports. Regarding the content, I will be glad to correct any errors I may have introduced. I will not, however, accept responsibility for the ponderous round-about phrasing of the text. That is our government or perhaps our grand-fathers' government in action.

Regarding the form, Hyper-Text Markup Language places some severe limits on how faithfully I can reproduce the layout. I think I've been able to do a reasonable job, but your mileage may vary. What my browser displays on my screen may not look much like what your browser puts up on your screen. Even if we have identical versions of the same browser, and we probably don't; you may have set a different font, or font size, or whatever. I can only hope that what you see doesn't differ too greatly from what the typesetter at the government printing office set three-quarters of a century ago.

Here and there I have drawn attention to what I believe are errors in the text. A mark such as (3) or [Note 1] is a link to a footnote. Many of those depended on my knowlege of place names in Pennsylvania. You may spot other errors that I didn't. If so, every page has a link to allow you to send me e-mail commenting on the matter.

The dates shown in the lists below are the valuation dates of the several railroads. Note that most, but not all of them are June 30, 1915, 1916, 1917, or 1918.

I have added a section of "Non-affiliated Dependent Lines". These are railroads which were not owned nor leased by the Pennsylvania Railroad or its subsidiaries directly or indirectly but which were dependent on the PRR for their connection(s) to the "outside world".
