I do not claim that every one of these was a one-for-one replacement at the exact same location. I just matched place names in the three lists. On the other hand, I do suspect that the scales which have the same length were the same scale with a beefed-up mechanism (or maybe just re-rated). I did not find any scales which had not changed in some way between 1900 and 1923. Return to top

Comments and speculations:

While there were a few scales which were replaced with shorter units, the trend was to longer scales, and very clearly to higher weight capacity. Not surprising, as there was a general trend to larger, higher capacity cars. I was a bit surprised that the increases in capacity occurred so early. No good reason for being surprised, I suppose, but I was.
